A Smart Front Door That Finally Earns Its Silicon

👀 What is it: Doma’s Intelligent Door is a fully motorized residential entry door built by the founders of August, only this time the lock is not the product. The entire door becomes an access-control appliance with UWB proximity sensing, IR facial recognition, mmWave occupancy tracking, a built-in opener, a 4K doorbell and an interior control panel. It is designed to look like a normal premium front door while quietly running a stack of sensors and local computing inside the frame.

🧪 Reality Check: The meaningful leap is integration: the hinge hides a motor that opens and closes the door for you, UWB resolves approach distance in centimeters, and mmWave ensures the door never closes on people or pets. Users simply walk toward the door and it authenticates, unlocks, swings open, and re-locks without manual input. Local processing trims latency and avoids cloud failures, while PoE plus a large backup battery give it appliance-grade uptime. This pushes the category from “smart lock accessory” to “mechanical automation layer” that existing bolt-on devices cannot match.

⚙️ Our take: A rare case of smart-home ambition backed by real engineering, though the value will depend on whether homeowners accept appliance pricing for a door that still needs years of field testing.

LG Puts a Tiny Inference Engine in Your Laundry

👀 What is it: LG’s new AIDD 2.0 washing machine line turns fabric care into a sensor-driven AI workflow rather than a preset-driven appliance. Across ten models, the machines read fabric type, load weight, soil level, and mechanical feedback, then pick wash patterns, water levels, temperatures, and even detergent dosing without manual tuning. It positions the washer less as a programmable motor and more as an embedded ML system supervising the drum.

🧪 Reality Check: AIDD 2.0 is the real pivot with a trained sensor-fusion model mapping vibration curves, torque signatures, and moisture profiles to thousands of optimized wash motions. This lets the machine reduce wear, cut energy use, and avoid the chronic “overwash” that ruins textiles. Combined with TurboWash’s aggressive hydraulics, Steam+ hygiene cycles, and auto-dosing for 30 loads, the result is a washer that behaves more like a closed-loop process controller than a home appliance. ThinQ connectivity mostly adds remote scheduling and status taps; the intelligence lives on the board.

⚙️ Our take: The AI pitch sounds promising, although without long-term wear data these models risk being little more than repackaged wash cycles wrapped in buzzwords.
